The 9 biggest neo-primes & defense-tech scale-ups

Where the giants of defense tech get their engineers.

We traced the career history of every 2026 software-engineering hire at nine of defense tech's biggest names — 908 people, from Anduril and Palantir to Saronic — to see where the talent actually comes from. It isn't the primes, and it isn't the military.

The scale of it

Anduril is hiring software engineers at a pace nobody else matches — 258 so far this year, more than Palantir and roughly a quarter of all 908 hires across these nine giants.

These are genuine new external hires only — interns and internal promotions were removed (SpaceX and Palantir carried the most internal churn). Counts reflect people whose first role at the company began in 2026.

Method: software-engineering titles (software / AI-ML / platform / infra / autonomy / SRE / security / forward-deployed engineers + eng managers) with a 2026 role start, via Crustdata; hardware/mechanical/RF/manufacturing roles and interns excluded.
02

Where they come from

Even the giants run on commercial talent. Four of five engineers came from the commercial world; barely one in eight came from anything defense-native.

The finding holds at every scale
Our pilot found the emerging defense startups pull ~75% of their engineers from commercial tech. The giants are no different — 79%. Whether it's a six-person team or Anduril's 258 hires, the new defense-tech is being built by commercial software engineers, not career defense people. The one difference: the giants lean harder on Big Tech — brand-name talent follows brand-name companies.

Defense tech's #1 feeder is Amazon

The pipeline doesn't start at a prime or a service academy. It starts at AWS.

The money stat
Amazon alone sent 88 engineers into these nine companies — more than Northrop, L3Harris, and Raytheon (the top three legacy primes here) combined. Big Tech supplies four of the top four feeders. If you want to hire the people defense tech is winning, you recruit against AWS — not against Lockheed.

The flow — where each giant pulls from

Seven source worlds, nine companies. The commercial and Big-Tech bands dominate; the neo-prime and military bands are threads.

Now zoom in on the three biggest — Anduril, Palantir, and Scale AI. The question that matters most: are they winning commercial tech's experienced engineers, or its juniors? We profiled a deep sample of their 2026 software hires — years of experience, and how long they'd stayed at their last job before jumping.

Average experience, by company

Anduril

Scale AI
8.7 yrs
Palantir
5.1 yrs

Palantir runs younger — its Forward-Deployed Engineers pull the average down. Anduril and Scale hire notably more seasoned.

Caught mid-move, not pried loose
These aren't long-tenured lifers being extracted — 76% came from a job they'd held under three years (average prior tenure ~2 years). And the engineers from Amazon — the biggest single feeder — average 8.6 years of experience but only ~2.25 years at Amazon: seasoned people who were already restless, and defense tech was there to catch them. The takeaway for a hiring team: the target isn't a defense veteran or a new grad — it's the experienced commercial engineer about 18–24 months into their current role.

Seniority figures are from an in-depth sample of ~200 of the three companies' 2026 software hires (years-of-experience and tenure fully populated, so shares are reliable); absolute counts in this zoom are sample-based, not the full cohort.

Inside Anduril's 258

Anduril isn't recruiting defense insiders — it's out-recruiting Big Tech for Big Tech's own people.

Anduril's top feeders are Amazon (34), Microsoft (15), and Meta (13). Big Tech is 71 of its 258 hires (28%); the entire legacy-prime world contributed 16 (6%); the military, 6; and exactly one engineer came from another neo-prime. This is a commercial-tech recruiting operation wearing a defense badge.

06

Hiring over time

The pace built through the first half and peaked in June. July's dip is reporting lag, not a slowdown.

050100150200JanFebMarAprMayJunJul15812011910414718377

Software hires by month of start date, all nine companies. June (183) was the biggest month. LinkedIn profiles lag real start dates by weeks, so July (77) is almost certainly undercounted.

07

How Anduril's pipeline shifted as it scaled

As Anduril grew from a few dozen engineers a year to 400+, Big Tech's share of its software hires roughly quadrupled — while defense-native sources were cut nearly in half.

Commercial techBig TechDefense-nativeAcademia

The shift, in one line
Big Tech's share of Anduril's software hires rose from ~6% in 2020 to ~25% in 2026; defense-native sources (primes, military, other defense startups, neo-primes) fell from ~28% to ~15%. Commercial tech stayed the dominant lane the whole way. Growth pulled Anduril toward commercial talent, not toward the traditional defense base.

Scale: Anduril's software-engineering hiring grew from ~11 people in 2019 to 275 in 2024 and 434 in 2025 (2026 is year-to-date). Important caveat: this counts current employees only, so earlier years are undercounted — anyone who has since left is invisible — and the early mix reflects who's still there. Shares are shown only for years with a solid sample (2020 onward); read the trend as directional, not precise. Source: Crustdata career-history, Sept 2026.

08

Do the giants poach each other?

Barely. They're all fishing the same commercial pond — not each other's.

Neo-prime → neo-prime movement
Across all 908 hires, only about 12 came from another neo-prime. Palantir and SpaceX are the main internal feeders (e.g. SpaceX→Palantir, Palantir→Applied Intuition), but the volume is tiny. The giants aren't trading engineers with each other — the war for talent is being fought against commercial tech, not among themselves.

Method, scope & caveats

Scope: nine of the biggest neo-primes and defense-tech scale-ups (Anduril, Palantir, SpaceX, Scale AI, Applied Intuition, Shield AI, Saronic, Skydio, Vannevar). 908 genuine new external software hires, 2026 YTD.

• Interns and internal promotions/boomerangs were excluded to isolate real new hires (~200 interns and ~409 internal moves removed — heaviest at SpaceX and Palantir). A person counts only if their first role at the company began in 2026.

• "Prior employer" = most recent prior external employer by end date; resolved for 903 of 908. Big Tech = Google/Amazon/Microsoft/Meta/Apple/Nvidia only — and it's Amazon-dominated (88 of 163).

• Palantir and SpaceX have large commercial businesses, so not all of their software hires work on defense; they're included because we're tracking talent movement across the whole community.

• A few LinkedIn data artifacts (e.g. the defunct "Martin Marietta Energy Systems" label, staffing-vendor names) were set aside from the feeder tables; they don't change the picture. July is undercounted due to profile-update lag.

• Source: Crustdata career-history signal, September 2026 pull. Categorization is rule-based and imperfect at the margins.

Who's behind this

The Arena recruits inside defense tech.

The engineers these companies want are at Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta — and most don't know defense is calling yet. Sourcing them, and selling the mission, is exactly the search we run. Building your team, or open to the jump? Let's talk.
